What I'm Reading This Week #16
I'm in an airport on my way to my first in-person POD Network conference, so I don't have a lot of time and the past week has been hectic, getting everything ready so that I could leave town for a few days. At the same time, my list of articles is building up! As a result, I'm just going to dump everything here without a whole lot of commentary. Enjoy!
First, some articles directly related to classroom practices:
- Carrie Jarosinski. The Power of Role Modeling Self-compassion Practices in Your Class. Faculty Focus. October 24, 2022.
- Beth McMurtrie. Still Struggling With Engagement? You’re Not Alone. Chronical of Higher Education. November 10, 2022.
- Beckie Supiano. Flipping a Class Helps - But Not For the Reason You’d Think. Inside Higher Ed. November 3, 2022.
- Chad Topaz and Nate Brown. How STEM Faculty Can Fight Institutional Racism and Sexism. Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. October 18, 2022.
Next, a couple of articles on academic integrity. Thanks to Dean for Student Success Ian Binnington for sharing the first one with Allegheny faculty:
- Sebastian Burkholdt. Focusing On the Positive in Academic Integrity Education. Integrity Education. September 6, 2022.
- Joel Heng Hartse. What Happened When I Made My Students Cheat. Inside Higher Ed. November 9, 2022.
Some articles that provide career advice to faculty at different stages:
- Rebecca Mason. Tenure and the Arrival Fallacy. Chronicle of Higher Education. November 14, 2022.
- Jennifer Snodgrass. Why To Develop a Purpose Statement for Your Career and Life. Inside Higher Ed. November 10, 2022.
- Michael S. Weisbach. Making the Most of Life After Tenure. Inside Higher Ed. November 15, 2022.
And lastly, the two most recent posts from Matt Reed, whose son is a student at the University of Virginia (where I was a post-doc). I don't know why it's so hard for politicians to do something substantial to stop school shootings (amongst other things).
- Matt Reed. Another American Night. Inside Higher Ed. November 15, 2022.
- Matt Reed. The Next Day. Inside Higher Ed. November 16, 2022.
